Advanced Bangla Writing Skills
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This project focused on the vibrant and culturally rich celebration of Sakrain (Shakrain), the traditional kite festival that marks the end of the Bengali month of Poush. Centered in Old Dhaka, Sakrain transforms the skyline into a sea of colorful kites, with streets alive in a festive blend of music, food, lights, and community spirit.
Through vivid descriptions and cultural observations, the project captured how this festival, rooted in heritage, unites people from different walks of life in joyous competition and shared celebration. The study also documented the intricate rituals of the day, early morning preparations, rooftop kite battles, fireworks, and traditional food stalls showing how Sakrain is not merely a festival but a living expression of Old Dhaka’s identity.
PROJECT JUSTIFICATION
Sakrain is more than just a day of kite-flying; it is a tradition that connects generations and preserves a unique aspect of Dhaka’s cultural heritage. In an age where urban life is increasingly fast-paced and traditions risk fading away, documenting and analyzing such festivals is crucial.
This project serves to highlight the social and cultural significance of Sakrain not only as an entertainment event but as a collective cultural memory. By studying the rituals, the atmosphere, and the economic activities surrounding the festival, the project demonstrates how Sakrain strengthens community bonds, boosts local businesses, and reinforces Old Dhaka’s cultural identity in the face of modernization.
