Convergence Communication 1
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This project centered on the theme of multiculturalism, using performance art to explore how different religious perspectives can influence attitudes toward music. Our group created a silent, symbolic performance portraying two families, one Muslim, one Hindu, raising their children with contrasting views about pursuing music. While one family encouraged their child to embrace musical passion, the other discouraged it, prioritizing academics over artistic aspirations.
Through expressive body language, dress codes, and symbolic actions, the performance conveyed not only the differences in cultural outlook but also the importance of mutual respect, empathy, and coexistence across belief systems. By stripping away spoken dialogue, we allowed the audience to interpret the scenes visually and emotionally, making the message accessible to all.
PROJECT JUSTIFICATION
Music, as a universal language, transcends boundaries, but cultural and religious perspectives often shape whether it is embraced or discouraged. In a society where religion plays a central role in identity, these differing viewpoints can profoundly impact young people’s career choices and self-expression.
This project was justified by the need to address a rarely discussed yet socially relevant topic: how family attitudes toward music are shaped by religious beliefs. By presenting this through performance art, we provided a safe and creative medium to spark reflection, discussion, and awareness without direct confrontation. Our goal was to show that cultural diversity, including differences in religious opinion, can enrich society when approached with understanding and respect, rather than division.
LEARNINGS & OUTCOMES
This project offered both artistic growth and deeper social understanding:
- Art as a Communication Tool – Learned how to deliver a clear social message through non-verbal performance, relying on visual cues and symbolism.
- Understanding Cultural Nuances – Gained insight into how religion can influence personal and family decisions in ways that affect creative expression.
- Team Collaboration – Strengthened coordination, planning, and adaptability while working with a diverse group of members.
- Audience Engagement – Discovered the importance of anticipating varied audience interpretations, especially when working on sensitive or potentially controversial themes.
- Handling Constructive Criticism – Learned to receive feedback positively, using it to refine future performances and avoid unnecessary controversy while keeping the message impactful.
- Improvisation & Problem-Solving – Adapted our initial plan multiple times due to resource limits and conceptual adjustments, proving the value of flexibility in creative projects.
